Just as many of Ovid's metamorphosis have been retold and recounted throughout the centuries and millenniums it has endured, the stories in the works are also the subjects on many great, and some not so, works of art. In the case of Jason and Medea, the artwork most commonly focus on two different items: The seizing of the golden fleece by Jason, and the crafting of the various magic herbs by medea for Jason. These are key points in the story, as well as being some of the more artistically prominent moments in a story which otherwise does not make for great artwork. The common depiction of the magic herb scene is that of medea crafting the medicine for Aeson, as Jason watches filled with hope overhead. This tends to stick directly with the text’s description itself, as they are able to articulate the sense of worry and plea that Jason has for the herbs, thus making it easier for the reader to tell just how much Aeson means to Jason. As for Medea, she looks somewhere between worried and focused. As the task she is doing is one of absolute precision, with the life and happiness of a loved one on the line, she must carefully craft this medicine with no errors, as one extra drop could be the difference between life and death for Aeson. As for the seizing of the fleece, the moment most artist attempt to recreate is that right after the dragon has just been put to sleep and Jason is now headed toward the fleece. While this may not be the most artistic moment of the battle between Jason and the dragon, it is the one with the most story importance, so it is validated in that sense. While there is no real uniform depiction of Jason or any other part of the scene, most just had Jason in a somewhat towering stance as the dragon has faded off to sleep. Although not entirely in- line with the text, this allows for the heroic feeling to be broadcast onto Jason, which is something the text alone did not do. In summary, the story of Jason and Medea, although not riddled with artistic scenes, provides artists with plenty of material to craft a telling and appealing product.
